A bus carrying passengers has plunged into a major river in France after a trainee driver reportedly made an error.

The vehicle hit a parked car that also fell into the River Seine at around 8:30am UK time this morning. Four people were on the bus at the time, including the driver, an instructor, and two passengers. It is understood no one was in the parked car.

The incident unfolded at the Draveil bridge near the Quai Jean-Pierre Timbaud, according to local reports. A team of divers raced to the area and all four passengers were rescued from the bus as it quickly began to sink.

Images showed the vehicle fully submerged in water while a dark blue car lay floating a few feet away. Divers searched the vehicle before confirming no one was trapped inside.

The mayor of Juvisy, Lamia Bensarsa Reda, said she was "stunned" by the accident, adding it was the "worst day" of her life.

"It's the first time I've seen anything like this. I think I've just experienced the worst day of my life. Luckily, there were no casualties thanks to the quick response of the police and emergency services," she also said speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien.

"Our municipal police officers are on site to keep the very congested traffic flowing as smoothly as possible around the Seine riverbanks," Reda added. In a press release, she said Île-de-France Mobilités "is asking its operator to launch an internal investigation to determine the causes of this accident as quickly as possible."

The car and then the bus are expected to be pulled from the water later today.
