Flyers’ Cam York sends Penguins home with epic Game 6 overtime winner

The Flyers have eliminated the Penguins from the Stanley Cup Playoffs thanks to a Cam York overtime winner in a 1-0 game.

The Philadelphia Flyers have eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins thanks to Cam York’s overtime winner. A 0-0 game, Game 6 went to overtime and nearly completed the first extra period before a goal was scored. Noah Cates won the face-off and screened the goalie, providing traffic for York’s shot to clip the post and rocket past Silvos.

This was York’s first goal since January 21 and just the 24th of his NHL career. An unsuspecting hero ended the series for the Flyers, and they are moving on to the second round. The Penguins and Flyers went to overtime scoreless, but not for a lack of scoring attempts. Dan Vladar made 32 saves for Philadelphia, while Arturs Silovs made 26 saves for the road team. According to MoneyPuck, Philly led the Expected Goals battle 2.54 to 2.35 in regulation. So while it was a scoreless effort, there were some offensive chances. The Flyers also had a great chance from Owen Tippett and Porter Martone. A Tippett shot rebounded right onto Martone’s stick, but the rookie could not slide it by Silovs’s stick, which was sitting on the ice. It was the ensuing face-off that ended the game, with York’s goal coming just seconds later. Not a single member of the Flyers had a playoff overtime goal coming into this game. Five different players on the Penguins had at least one, with Evgeni Malkin having two to his name. That shows the difference in postseason experience between the Keystone State rivals. But after faltering in Games 4 and 5, the Flyers finally came through in Game 6. The best Penguins’ chance of overtime came from forward Anthony Mantha, who was all alone in front of the net. Vladar could not cover the puck, so Elmer Soderblom continued to whack at the puck in an effort ot muscle it through. A five-person wall of Flyers kept the puck out of the net and kept the game going. Four teams in NHL history have come back from down 3-0 in a best-of-seven playoff series. The Penguins came close to forcing a Game 7 from that position, but could not get the overtime winner to send the series back to Pittsburgh. It did not look like the Flyers were going to make the playoffs at the Olympic break. But they came back shot out of a cannon, stealing the final spot from the New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, they are onto the second round and a tough matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes after sending their rivals home.
