A French Senate delegation has concluded a six-day visit to India aimed at reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations, with a focus on parliamentary cooperation, port development, the blue economy, and innovation. The visit, which took place from April 10 to April 15, underscores the deepening ties envisioned in the Indo-French Horizon 2047 Roadmap, which aims to guide the partnership for the next quarter-century. The delegation, led by Senator Mireille Jouve, President of the France-India Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group, included senators Louis-Jean de Nicolay and Jean-Marie Mizzon.
The trip covered key strategic locations across India, including Mumbai, Puducherry, Chennai, and New Delhi, allowing the senators to engage with various facets of the Indo-French collaboration. In Mumbai, the delegation toured the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, India's largest container port, to observe its operations and the role of French shipping company CMA CGM in strengthening logistics. They also reviewed the progress of a water treatment and waste management project in Worli being developed by the French firm Suez, which serves approximately 2.5 million people. This highlights the practical cooperation on critical urban infrastructure and sustainability.
In Southern India, the visit concentrated on shared initiatives in sustainable development and ocean governance. The senators visited a social housing project in Puducherry, which is part of the Smart City initiative supported by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union. In Chennai, discussions at the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management centered on coastal resilience and marine biodiversity. The delegation also reviewed ongoing cooperation at the National Institute of Ocean Technology under India's Deep Ocean Mission, which involves a partnership with the French research body IFREMER on deep-sea research and marine technologies.
The diplomatic engagements in New Delhi reaffirmed the commitment to the "Special Global Strategic Partnership." The senators met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the bilateral relationship and reviewed ongoing cooperation. Discussions with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation, a key pillar of the relationship. The delegation also held talks with their Indian counterparts in the India-France Friendship Group, chaired by Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, to explore avenues for deeper mutual understanding and collaboration.
This visit builds on a series of high-level engagements, including the recent elevation of the relationship and the launch of the India-France Year of Innovation 2026. The focus on ports and the blue economy aligns with a joint roadmap established in 2022 to promote a sustainable and prosperous maritime domain.
