Michigan All-State basketball teams for boys and girls

The Detroit News names more than 150 all-state boys and girls basketball players in Michigan.

The state’s top high school basketball honors for the 2025-2026 season have been awarded, with East Lansing’s K.J. Torbert earning the prestigious Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award and Howell’s Lilly Williams securing the Mick McCabe Miss Basketball title. These selections cap a thrilling season that culminated in state championship games in East Lansing, celebrating both individual excellence and team achievements across Michigan.

K.J. Torbert, a 6-foot-3 guard, made history alongside his father, Kelvin Torbert, as the first father-son duo to win the Mr. Basketball award. The elder Torbert won the honor in 2001. The younger Torbert, who has signed to play for Bowling Green, was a dominant force for East Lansing, averaging over 25 points and six rebounds per game. His leadership was instrumental throughout the season, although his top-ranked Trojans ultimately fell to Rockford, 54-50, in a hard-fought Division 1 state championship game. In the final, Torbert led all scorers with an impressive 28 points.

On the girls' side, Lilly Williams of Howell was the clear choice for Miss Basketball, an honor bestowed upon the state's top senior player by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. The 6-foot-5 center, a Michigan State signee, was a force in the paint, averaging 17.8 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game. Williams, who was homeschooled for three years before transferring to Howell for her senior season, also earned honors as a McDonald's All-American and was named the Gatorade Michigan Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Though her Howell team was defeated in the regional semifinals, her individual accolades reflect a season of unparalleled dominance.

The Michigan Sports Writers Association, which now selects the All-State teams formerly chosen by the Associated Press, announced its top honors across several divisions. In Division 1 girls, Williams was unanimously named Player of the Year. Joining her on the first team were standouts such as Mariah Sain of state champion Muskegon, Harlem Simpson of Birmingham Groves, and Sienna Wolfe of Rockford. Bernard Loudermill of Muskegon was named the Division 1 Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 34-29 victory over Detroit Renaissance for the state title. In Division 3, Kenna Hunt of Jackson Lumen Christi was named Player of the Year after leading her team to the state championship, while Kevin Tringali of Saugatuck earned Coach of the Year honors.

The boys' state championships saw four schools hoist trophies. In addition to Rockford's Division 1 victory, Freeland captured the Division 2 title, Pewamo-Westphalia won in Division 3, and Concord secured the Division 4 championship. In Division 4, Concord's Jett Smith was named Player of the Year, and his coach, Marcus Gill, received Coach of the Year honors. The other girls' state champions were Goodrich in Division 2 and Ishpeming in Division 4, capping a memorable season of high school basketball. Full All-State team selections for all divisions are anticipated to be released in the coming days, recognizing the depth of talent across the state.
