Teen murderer who stabbed stepdad and dog to death had chilling 'kill lists'

Logan Procter, 20, was sentenced to custody for life with a minimum term of 20 years and 10 months for the murder of his stepfather Christopher Owen and family dog, Poppy
A former college student has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his stepfather and the family dog, a crime driven by what the court heard was a desire to feel "unique." Logan Procter, 20, was 19 when he carried out the frenzied attack on the evening of October 22 last year, inflicting more than 70 stab wounds on 57-year-old Christopher Owen at their home in Shirebrook, Derbyshire. The family's Jack Russell, Poppy, was also killed in the attack, suffering 15 stab injuries.
During the sentencing at Derby Crown Court, it was revealed that the motivation for the killings was not a dispute or provocation, but a chilling thrill. Procter, who pleaded guilty to murder, had amassed a collection of knives and Samurai swords. Following the killings, he made a 999 call with "extreme calmness." An investigation into his mobile phones uncovered multiple "kill lists" he had compiled. These lists detailed names of people from his life, categorized under "home," "work," and "college." The "home" list included his mother and another family member, but at the top of the list was his stepfather, "Chris."
The court heard that Procter used two knives in the sustained assault on his stepfather. Judge Shaun Smith KC described the killings as "brutal, sustained and frenzied" and noted that "no-one foresaw the tragedy that was to unfold in terrifying events at your home." Procter's defense attorney stated that his client acknowledged and felt sorrow for the misery he caused, and did not seek to blame Mr. Owen, who was described as a "completely innocent victim." There had been no arguments or ill treatment preceding the horrific event.
Alison Owen, who lost her partner and is also Procter's mother, said her son had "never shown any form of anger or violence in all his life." Despite Procter's guilty plea, a definitive reason for the attack remains elusive to investigators. In addition to the kill lists, online searches related to torture and cannibalism were found on his devices. These discoveries paint a disturbing picture of the young man's mindset leading up to the murders.
Procter was sentenced to custody for life with a minimum term of 20 years and 10 months. As he begins his sentence, a community and a family are left to grapple with the shocking violence and the unanswered question of why a young man with no history of aggression would commit such a brutal act against his own family. The case highlights a chilling disconnect between Procter's outward demeanor and the violent thoughts he privately harbored.
