Horror Borneo helicopter crash kills 8 as aircraft crashes into jungle after take off

A helicopter has crashed into thick jungle a few minutes after take off as it headed over Borneo’s vast palm oil plantations killing eight people on board

A helicopter crash in the dense jungles of Borneo has claimed the lives of all eight people on board, Indonesian officials confirmed on Friday. The aircraft, an Airbus H130 operated by the local aviation company PT Matthew Air Nusantara, went down on Thursday while flying between two palm oil plantations in West Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of the island. The crash adds to a long list of transportation accidents in the sprawling archipelago, once again highlighting the safety challenges in a nation heavily reliant on air travel to connect its remote territories.

The helicopter departed from the Melawi district on Thursday morning and lost contact with air traffic control just five minutes into its flight. It was en route to another plantation in the Kubu Raya district when the incident occurred. The two crew members and six passengers on board, all reported to be men, were killed in the crash. Authorities have confirmed that one of the passengers was a Malaysian national.

Search and rescue teams were dispatched after the helicopter was reported missing. The wreckage was later located in a remote and densely forested area within the Sekadau district. The National Search and Rescue Agency, along with the Transportation Ministry, confirmed that the bodies of all eight victims were recovered from the crash site. The challenging terrain, characterized by dense jungle and steep hills, complicated the search efforts. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Pontianak, the provincial capital, for identification.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to be launched by Indonesian aviation authorities. Officials have not yet released any preliminary findings or speculated on the potential reasons for the accident. These types of flights are common in Borneo, a vast island shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, where large-scale palm oil and mining operations often rely on helicopters to transport personnel and supplies across inaccessible terrain.

This recent tragedy underscores the inherent risks associated with aviation in a country composed of over 17,000 islands. Indonesia has a history of air accidents, often attributed to a combination of difficult geography, unpredictable weather conditions, and, in some cases, lapses in safety standards. The reliance on air transport as a vital link for many communities and industries means that ensuring aviation safety remains a critical and ongoing challenge for the Indonesian government and transport operators.
