A 33-year-old man was shot and killed in his car on Wednesday night in Bhullar village, Amritsar, in an attack that his family alleges is the result of a long-standing feud. The victim, identified as Manjit Singh, was sitting in his vehicle outside a chicken shop at approximately 10:30 p.m. when the fatal assault occurred. Assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire, striking Singh multiple times and causing panic in the area. He was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Family members have informed authorities that they believe the murder stems from an old enmity. According to the victim's cousin, Malkit Singh, a dispute had taken place in 2024 which led to a police case being registered at the time. The family asserts that tensions have simmered between the two parties since that incident, culminating in Wednesday's deadly confrontation. Manjit Singh, a resident of Saudia village and a father of four, was reportedly alone in his vehicle when the attack took place. Police have stated that their initial findings also point towards an old rivalry as the likely motive.
The brazen nature of the killing has unsettled the local community. Malkit Singh, who witnessed the event, stated that the attackers, numbering around eight, arrived on one Honda Splendor and two Royal Enfield motorcycles. They fired four to five rounds, with three bullets hitting Manjit Singh. The victim's cousin also alleged that the assailants are known in the area for criminal activities, openly carry illegal weapons, and have been involved in violent disputes before, with several cases registered against them. He claimed the accused have connections with gangsters.
Police have launched a full investigation into the homicide, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Lopoke police station. Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Investigators were on the scene shortly after the incident and have recovered evidence, including empty bullet shells. Multiple police teams have been formed to pursue the suspects, and they are actively examining CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the perpetrators. The family has named four individuals they suspect of involvement in the attack.
As the investigation continues, authorities are conducting raids to locate and apprehend the suspects. The Superintendent of Police for investigations confirmed that efforts are underway to reconstruct the sequence of events using forensic and technical evidence. While the primary theory being pursued is that the murder was the result of a personal dispute, police have indicated they are exploring all possible angles. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about violence and the accessibility of illegal weapons in the region.
